Learn and Teach

This week in my Doctrine and Covenants class we are talking about teaching and learning. For my student choice assignment I am posting what I have learned on a blog. Maybe this is something that you will also find inspiration from as well.

As a college student my life has revolved around learning and getting an education. I feel fortunate to study at an institution where I can also learn about the gospel and gain a stronger testimony. In section 88 verse 77 of the Doctrine and Covenants we are given a commandment by Heavenly Father to “teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom.” We can learn something new every day but if we aren't spreading that knowledge to others it means nothing. We have the obligation to teach others and spread the word of God. Think of what life would be like without teachers. We have teachers at school, teachers in our homes, teachers at church. These are not always people who have a formal education as a teacher but just everyday people who have taken time to pass along knowledge they have gained that will benefit our lives.

Being a teacher can be scary but we are told that when we teach diligently the grace of Heavenly Father will be with us so that we are able to instruct more perfectly. We can use the spirit to lead and guide us to the things that will benefit those who are learning from us. Organization and preparation will help us become better teachers. We are counseled in section 88 verse 119 to, "organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing." When we are prepared with the knowledge we will have confidence in our message. We are also told to "teach one another words of wisdom" (D&C 88:118) We shouldn't be teaching things that will pollute the mind or bring someone closer to temptations.

Being a teacher of the gospel makes us missionaries. We don't have to have a formal missionary call to spread the words of our Heavenly Father. We can be a missionary at work, school and in our communities. We can't be successful missionaries if we don't have foundation of gospel knowledge. We should fill our minds and hearts with the knowledge of the gospel. This will help our testimonies grow so we are better able to bring Heavenly Fathers children back to him.

Be a learner and seek out truth but most importantly pass along the knowledge that you gain so that others might benefit.
